Insect Bites and Stings

Treating Insect Bites and Stings

Learn about Psorcon® E, a topical corticosteroid effective in treating the itching and swelling associated with dermatitis, insect bites, and plant rashes.

Topical corticosteroids may be used to treat the itching and swelling associated with insect bites and stings. Ask your doctor if topical corticosteroids may be right for you.

For all cases of insect bites or stings, first move to a safe area to avoid more bites or stings.

Mild Reactions

  • If you can see the stinger left behind by the insect, try to brush it off, but don't try to pull it out with a tweezer or your fingers as this could aggravate the inflammation and cause more venom to be released.
  • Swab the site with disinfectant.
  • To reduce pain and swelling, apply ice or a cold pack.
  • Over the counter antihistamines or hydrocortisone may provide some relief.

Severe Reactions

Severe reactions may progress rapidly. Dial 911 or call for emergency medical assistance if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of your lips or throat
  • Faintness
  • Confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Hives
  • Nausea, cramps, or vomiting
